„The Blazing World” is a utopian theatre project that draws on Margaret Cavendish’s visionary science fiction to explore questions of female participation, power structures, and societal imagination.
In 1666, Europe is in the midst of a minor ice age. The plague has returned. London is burning. While forms of rule are being overthrown, questioned, and fundamentally reimagined, Margaret Cavendish emerges as a pioneer of science fiction literature with The Blazing World. In a utopian parallel world beyond the North Pole, surrounded by animal beings and fantastical technologies, she interrogates female participation in society, science, and politics. She searches for answers, creates a matriarchy, ultimately subjugates entire planets—and continues to ask: What worlds do we imagine when our own is falling apart?
