“Kornél Esti is an artist of life. He is a carefree connoisseur of people and a cheerful pessimist. The subject is nothing less than the meaning of life in the face of death. Esti is dazed by the deep and inextricable confusion of existence. His eyes are like the lens of a microscope. In every everyday event, he attempts to discover the essential—the answer to how we should live, how we should treat one another, in awareness of the fact that we will die. Esti Kornél knows nothing else. His search for a goal is playful and desperate. Playful because life can only be endured with laughter; desperate because life is meaningless. Or if it has a meaning, then it is the incessant search itself. The journey itself—by tram or train—until we are as stiff and immobile as a marionette left behind.”
