HELGA LÁZÁR (born 1993 in Tatabánya, Hungary) studied directing (acting and puppet theatre) at the University of Theatre and Film Arts Budapest (SZFE), puppet theatre at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, and theatre studies at Freie Universität Berlin. She lives in Leipzig and works internationally as a performer, director, and set designer. From 2018 to 2023, she was a guest lecturer at SZFE Budapest; since 2020, she has been pursuing a PhD in theatre studies.
Her work has been presented, among others, at steirischer herbst, Graz, the DunaPart Festival Budapest, the Prague Quadrennial, the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, and the International Puppet Theatre Festival Erlangen. In her artistic practice, she combines performative work with ongoing research into the ontology of matter: objects, materials, and substances appear not as props but as autonomous agents that co-shape action, rhythm, and meaning. In her productions, she shifts the boundaries between visual and physical theatre, works with material performance, experiments with documentary modes of narration, and investigates how matter itself becomes a narrative agent.
